I wanted to highlight Ryan Gosling’s upcoming film Drive. At the helm is Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, best known for Bronson, a gripping indie featuring Tom Hardy. At first glance Drive reads a lot like The Transporter. Ryan Gosling’s character is listed only as “Driver”, and he balances his side job as a getaway driver with his 9-to-5. You might be asking, why is the film noteworthy? A couple of reasons…
First, the cast is phenomenal. Scott disagrees with me, but I think Ryan Gosling is one of the finest young actors working in Hollywood. Starring opposite him is Academy-Award nominee Carey Mulligan, who was absolutely brilliant in the adaptation for Nick Hornby’s An Education. The supporting cast includes Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle). Plus, how many films about getaway drivers premiere at Cannes?
I couldn’t feature the film on yesterday’s Trailer Tuesday because the official trailer isn’t even out yet. Drive is slated for a September release, so expect the full trailer in the coming months. In the meantime, enjoy this teaser clip… This is a different breed of heist film.
